Elekes: Vodun Necklaces

Elekes: Vodun Necklaces

ElekesElekes are necklaces crafted in the colors and numerical patterns of the Orishas, Vodun, Lwa, African Deities, and syncretized Spirits.  Our standard elekes are made with 6/0 (4mm.) ”E-beads” and waxed cotton thread.  They are all at least 20 inches long so they can be put on over the head.  Some are longer so that the pattern can be continuous.

Each one is made by hand on the day of the week that is most auspicious for that Spirit.  It is then blessed and given the initial artists’ consecration at our altar.  We make them for any Spirit that you like, including your ancestors.  If you have an ancestor or favorite person who has passed on that you would like to honor, please let us know their favorite color and number, or tell us a bit about them so we can design something for you.

What is an eleke?

An eleke (also spelled ileke) is essentially a string of beads.  In Hispanic communities, they are often called collares.  There are eleke for the neck, and eleke ide for the waist.  They are also sometimes referred to as one’s pearls even when they are not actually made of pearl.

In the context of Vodun and related belief systems, it is a necklace that is made in colors and a numeric pattern of one or more Spirits.  They can serve as amulets, talismans, ceremonial costume, just to honor a particular Spirit, or to identify children or followers of a particular Spirit.

In some systems, the ones worn for general ceremonial purposes are beaded differently than the ones worn by children of a particular Vodun, Orisha, or Lwa.  For instance, some may wear a white and transparent beaded eleke for Obatala for ceremony, but those who have a particular affinity for him may also wear one that is green and dark red in their daily lives.

Elekes are considered standard equipment, especially in most diaspora systems wherein we didn’t often get to keep much else.

How do I receive an eleke?

You may buy or make your own if you are a solitary practitioner and certain of who the Spirit of your head is.  If you are not sure, then you should request a reading or consult your local priest/ess.

Those who request a reading from me for the purpose of finding the Spirit of their head will receive two free elekes with their reading: one for Eshu (Elegua, Exu), and one for the Spirit of their head.  This is because Eshu is the gatekeeper, and for ceremonial purposes, you should put on the Eshu eleke first, and then the one for the Spirit of your head.

Do not attempt to consecrate or wear an eleke that was mass produced in a sweatshop or factory.  They have bad energy because they are made using de facto slave labor.  Elekes/collares should be made with care and with joy by spiritual people who do it of their own free will.  To wear something made in a sweatshop for ceremonial purposes will bring some serious wrath from Mama Tchamba.

How do I wear and care for my eleke?

You should consecrate your elekes when you receive them, if you bought them or made them for yourself.  You should wear them with care.  If you like to wear them in normal life, you should have a set you wear for ceremony, and a separate one or set that you wear for normal purposes.  The one you wear for ceremonial purposes should never be worn to the bathroom or when you are doing anything other than participating in ritual or ceremony.

If it needs to be cleaned, you should do this only with natural cleaners that are pleasant to the Spirit it is dedicated to.  If you’re not sure, just use plain water.

You have a couple of options for storage of your elekes.  You may hang them up together (Eshu first) or you may keep each one in the space of your altar or sacred spaces that correspond to them.

What about rope collares?

There are rope and cord collares.  We don’t have them at this time, though we do plan to.  They are somewhat difficult to find made by mystics, but you can consecrate one that was made by a crafter of another faith.  We are all children of Yemaya.

Tarot and Bone Readings with Free Charm Pendant

Tarot and Bone Readings with Free Charm Pendant

SheloyaWe offer Tarot and Hoodoo Bone readings.  With your reading, you’ll receive a free charm pendant.  Which one will depend on the outcome of your reading.  If your reading is about something specific, please state so in the instructions section of your payment form.

The way we do readings is a bit different from most offers you see on the internet.  First of all, we take a photo of the card or bone spreads, and send them to you by email, so you can see with your own eyes what came up.  Second, that “spreads” was plural on purpose.  If the question requires it, we will do as many spreads or throw the bones as many times as it takes to come up with something clear.

If the result is that the Spirits refuse to answer your question or reveal anything to you at the time, we will refund your money.

Hoodoo Bones ReadingIn addition to the reading, if it seems your issue requires even deeper looking into, we will do trance-work to attempt to gain more clarity.  Also, if something comes up later, we will email you to let you know.  So with your order, you get a full service reading, not just a “quickie”.

The charm we send you will also not be a “quickie”.  It will be a carefully constructed pendant or gris-gris using the most effective ingredients, crystals, and symbols.  It may even be multiple objects if this is what is needed.

If the reading is to find the Orisha/Vodun/Spirit of your head, then instead of charms, you will receive two elekes, one for Eshu, and one for the Spirit of your head.

Hoodoo Bones (Voodoo Runes or African Runes)

Hoodoo Bones (Voodoo Runes or African Runes)

Sheloya’s Hoodoo bones are meant for people who are learning to read bones or want a more “portable” version of them.  When you’re first starting out, these will get you used to it.  In time, you may wish to replace some of them with other symbolic objects you gather along your path.  If you’re an advanced bone reader, these are easier to carry, and more replaceable if lost or stolen.  They are also easier for your querants to understand, which makes life easier for those who do distance readings.  It’s easy to show them what’s going on.  They still require some vision to truly understand though.  Here’s our post in the Orisha Online Altar on how to read Sheloya’s bones.

You can order full sets, partial sets, or individual bones to add to your collection.  The tray is not included.  We will be selling trays or specially made baskets in the future.

Natural Ruby Oya’s Mirror
In Sheloya’s Hoodoo bones, Oya’s Mirror tells you whether the reading is talking about the past and present, or the future.  The glass version that comes with the sets works well, but some people prefer the additional vibrational sensitivity of a natural stone, specifically ruby.  Ruby is an emotional purifier and is better than glass at filtering out delusion and self interest that the querant or the reader may project onto the bones that may inhibit the Ase of the bones.  It basically clears the air around the bones so that the Orishas and natural forces have a free hand to turn and nudge things where they will.  If you do a lot of readings or do readings in public or a busy area, this will be very helpful in increasing the accuracy of your readings.

They are made with an at least 2 carat ruby cabochon or rough acquired from private family mines and people who find them incidentally or during tours of mines, to avoid negative energy or contributing to de facto slavery.

Product name: Natural Ruby Oya’s Mirror
Price: $35.00

Blood Obsidian Oya’s Mirror
If you have come to this page because you know someone who has one that looks a bit different, this is the explanation.  Every once in awhile, I come across a good piece of red Mt. Saint Helens or African red obsidian.  This is the best material as it is touched by Aganju, the Orisha of volcanoes and the unknown wilderness.  Having a piece of this in one’s bone collection helps when asking questions specifically about travelling, exploration, and journeys into literal wilderness.  When I get some pieces that are good to make Oya’s mirrors out of, I send them to certain people who have ordered sets before as bonus items.  I don’t sell them because this is a rare material in the form that is needed for Oya’s mirror, so it’s impossible to put a price on it.  So as the Orishas bless me, I give to my customers.

When you receive and begin using your bones, please write comments to let us know how you like them.  Thank you and Ase!
